I feel like anime has been just as guilty of crazy ridiculous female bodies as American comic books — which have been under fire as of late. It seems like it’s become worse over time. Examples include moe girls that are just so docile and gross and naive, crazy boob characters (see Naga from Slayers in the 90’s, where her perpetual joke was constant giant boob jiggling), and the tiring Boobies joke from Space Dandy.
I think I’ve grown tolerant to it over the years, which is kinda crazy in its own way – But my tolerance now is fading after decades of the same stuff and/or losing patience for bad anime. I remember when the ”boob comparison” joke blew up in the late 80s / 90s, now I feel like any given show of any given “quality” or praise has to make that joke at least once between two principal female characters.
Moe started as something charming, I guess (albeit somewhat pervy, I’m sure), then somewhere in the mid 90s when the industry started declining they doubled down on what sells moe mutated into terrible crazy monsters, like the ones you see in dating sim games turned anime like Air, even Madoka (a show I like), the characters might as well have eyes on the sides of their heads. Kill la Kill, while an amazing show off and on, I strongly believe is held back by the T&A outfits which initially provided distinction but toward the end were just distracting to me. I guess I get what the show creators are trying to say “they’re comfortable as who they are”, but that barely holds up when confronted with ass shots every five seconds. The show could have been just as great if that wasn’t a focus – I once saw characters outfits for KLK by the creator of Little Witch Academia, and they looked bad-ass and amazing and really highlighted each character without being effectively a body g-string.I know KLK is also paying homage to stuff like Cutey Honey and there’s always been perversion in anime since it’s inception, it just feels like boob characters / jokes are the Family Guy of anime. It was amusing at first before I knew better, but now it’s just tired, filler content.
